Humane Society of Broward County-Adopt a Pet Today

Neal Bloom Copyright 2008

A little over a month ago I had to sadly had to put my dog to sleep. We had a wonderful 17yrs together and I'll always cherish the times we had. A few weeks after his passing.....I decided to take the food we had left over and donate it to the Humane Society of Broward County.

While I was there for my visit..... I decided to go look at what dogs they had available to adopt.

Adopting a rescued pet is a great thing for both the pet and the new owner. I looked around and went through all 4 kennels and I'll have to admit that it was hard for me to see so many dogs that were left abandoned.

Right now it's too soon for me to take in another pet at the moment but if you know anyone who would be interested....you should send them down to the Humane Society of Broward County.

If I ever decided to get another dog....you can be sure I'll be looking to adopt it at the Humane Society.

Hi Neal~ It is very hard to see all of those pets in the cages. A few years ago, my  twin daughters and I went to the local Humane Society after our Golden died, and we were just going to "Look".  Needless to say they talked us in to just taking "Suki" home for the night....  we ended up keeping "Suki".....  Anyway, thanks for stopping by earlier and reading and commenting on my post.  I appreciate you taking the time to do it!  Vickie

Hi Neal-Although I don't know you and this is my first comment on one of your posts. I came across this one. I think this is so awesome. I love all furbabies and mine are all rescued ones. so this type of thing is very near and dear to my heart.  God bless you. I'm truly very sorry to hear of your loss. It is heartbreaking when you lose a animal because they are family in every sense of the word. Here is one of my 13 furbabies. This is my wild child Bubby.

Neal - It is a wonderful thing to be able to give these animals a loving and caring home.  I actually took my cat Baxter in before he was going to be forced to go to the Humane Society.  By the way, great gesture to donate the left over food.

I'm so glad you took the food in to the Humane Society. With so much economic distress, many people aren't able to care for their pets and these pets may end up in the Humane Society. Maybe some day you'll be ready to adopt...it takes time to get over a loss like that.

Neal I am not a dog or cat person, but I give a lot of credit to those that are and get their pets at these facilities.

Hi Neal,
I agree the Humane Society is the place to go for a pet.  I don't know how you walked away without one--did you feel a connection to any particular one?

Neal, good for you!  And I'm convinced that our pets adopt us, not the other way around!

Hola Neal - good on ya for this post.  Both of our dogs are rescues - one from the street, the other from our vet.  These dogs are the Heinz 57 variety, and God love 'em for it.  I know for a fact that these little guys have given us much more than we will ever be able to give them.

Neal:

The Human Society or similar shelters are a terrific place to find pets. We have gotten most of our cats and dogs over the years from shelters and it has always been a terrific experience.

Jeff

I can't go in those places, it breaks my heart. A couple had 4 puppies today at the office today, the wife breeds, I couldn't take my eyes off of them. So adorable, but as a mom of 4 dogs and one kitten my house is full.

No it's not too soon, a new puppy or dog heals ya quicker. How about one for the holiday?

Neal - How funny is it that Kathy McGraw recommends to readers in her blog today . . . .and they BOTH have pet stories.  Dang I knew I liked her says the mother of . . .  .2 dogs (Golden named Dallas and Maltese/Shitzu named Hailee) 3 horses (Scout - my beautiful regal tobiano walker, Joey - my husbands walker and Dakota - my daughters Morab) and I believe at the moment we have 2 barn cats--Peaches the old mistress of the barn and Kailee the pesky kitten!!

That's a great reminder to everyone. Animal shelters need all the extra "press" they can get.

Enjoyed the post but these places tear my heart out! It kills me to go there and only take one away. PAINFUL.

Neal-I have only acquired all my pets through adoption agencies. It upsets me when I hear stories how people go into pet stores and spend thousands of dollars on purebreds when there are so many loving little babies being ready to be put to sleep if noone rescues them :(

great post, we are having a lot of overpopulation of these human society events from animals abandoned by those facing foreclosures and leaving them behind

This is our rescued Rosy that we put to sleep in August.  I'll always remember we called her Rosy because when we got her she smelled so bad that she had to be given the name of a sweet-smelling flower.  She gave us 14 great years.  Just wish I had the time and space to rescue more.

I think it is awesome that you wrote a post about this and gave away the last of the dog food to someplace that really needs it.  My sister (Shellie) is an adoption director at the Nebraska Humane Society and I can tell you they need that type of stuff all the time!

Also consider breed specific rescue when it is "time".  I work Italian Greyhound rescue and we always need good homes for the little buggers that have had previous IG experience and knowledge.  We always make sure the homes are a good match for all personalities (dog to owner to owner's nonfur children.)  Look for the rescue in your area and get the application filled out and home visit done.  You never know when that right one will come around!

With all the foreclosures and the economy garbage going on right now, adoption is a great choice.  Puppy mills are seeing a decrease in sales and hiring auctioneers to get rid of their "excess inventory."

It was a good trip to go down there agin...haven't been to those places for years.
