2008 Ft. Myers Beach Sandsculpting Championships

Hello Folks,

The 2008 Ft. Myers Beach Sandsculpting Championship is being held on Ft. Myers Beach this weekend. The contest actually started yesterday (Wednesday November 5) and last through Sunday (November 9).

The contest takes place toward the southern end of Ft. Myers Beach behind the Holiday Inn. If you choose to go on Saturday or Sunday be prepared to park a fair distance away and have to walk to get to the contest. You are able to park in a couple designated areas and take the Trolley for free.

One area for Public parking is the Lover's Key State Park. The park has a huge grassy area for parking your car and then hop on the FREE Trolley to the Sand Sculpture and back. The other parking area is at Summerlin Square Plaza. Again you can park your car here and then take the FREE Trolley.

If you have never been to a Sand Sculpturing contest it is quite amazing to see the works of art these people are able to do with a pile of sand. Below are some pictures from the 2007 contest.

For additional information, please visit the official website for the contest:

Stay tuned for pictures for the 2008 Contest which will be posted this weekend.

They have a sandcastle building contest in Galveston and South Padre Island too. These are tons of fun to watch and also fun to do if you are up for the work. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

This is amazing.  I'm yet to witness something like that in person.  You would think I've seen it before, living in California and all.  I look forward to seeing more pictures.

Absolutely incredible!  I'd love to see something like that in person.

Sean, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the finished products from this year.  Thanks for sharing.

We had our sandbuilding contest back in August, I think it was, at Imperial Beach. I haven't been in many years because it brings in about 100,000 people, a number which the area really is not equipped to handle. One has to get there a day early in order to get to the beach. They claim to be the largest sandbuilding contest in the world, with entries from many foreign countries, and each year when I look at the number of entries and the cash prizes, it wouldn't suprise me. Just looking at the pictures in the paper and on the Internet is fun. I was never able to building anything taller than about one foot. Of course, that might be because my older brother or the ocean waves were always destroying my lovely creationgs -- LOL

Sean & Pillar,

Thanks for the post. Clearly this was the place to be. Did you mention the AR party on the beach:)
