Naperville Rt 59 Pedestrian Bridge

Naperville Rt 59 Pedestrian Bridge

As per city of Naperville website, the Rt 59 Pedestrian Bridge should be open to the public by end of the month. The bridge provides a crossing for the existing bike paths from Tall Grass subdivision to Frontier Park.

NAPERVILLE, Ill.— The center section of the new Route 59 pedestrian bridge was installed in the overnight and early morning hours of Monday, June 16 and Tuesday, June 17, bringing this project one step closer to successful completion.

Although the bridge is now in place, it will not be open to pedestrians until the end of the month, when the project is scheduled to be complete. Workers must still pour concrete and install rebar to complete the bridge structure. The asphalt paths leading to the bridge have not yet been poured, but are anticipated to be installed in the next week, weather permitting.

“This is a wonderful new asset to the community,” City Engineer Bill Novack said. “This is a safe and convenient way for the walkers, runners, bikers, in-line skaters and recreational enthusiasts of Naperville to cross Route 59. I am pleased the bridge will be ready for resident and visitor enjoyment in just a few short weeks.”

In recent years, there has been a surge of new residential and commercial development in southwestern Naperville. In addition, other activity centers such as the new 95th Street Library, Frontier Park and various schools have attracted new residents to the area. These residents have had difficulty crossing Route 59, due to its high traffic volumes and high vehicular speeds.

The bridge crosses Route 59 between 95th Street and 103rd Street. When completed, the pedestrian bridge will connect to Frontier Park on the east and to the Virgil Gilman trail on the west.

An opening ceremony for the bridge is in the process of being planned by the city. More details will be forthcoming. Updated pictures of the bridge installation are available on the city’s Web site at www.naperville.il.us/pedbridge.aspx. An edited video of the bridge installation will be available on the city’s Web site, as well as the city’s government access TV station, WCNC Channel 6 (WOW) and Channel 10 (Comcast), on Monday, June 23.
