SHIPSHEWANA FLEA MARKET AND AUCTION is open May 6th through October 29, 2008 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. You can find hundreds of vendors selling everything from fresh fruit to handcrafted furniture. You will find antique, livestock and horse auction on the same grounds located on SR 5 in Shipshewana.
Don't leave town without experiencing home-style Amish or Mennonite cooking at several of the local resturtants. It is a fun trip, whether you are from out of state or just down the road!
SHIPSHEWANA-is located in the north western section of LaGrange County. It was incorporated in 1916 and the town was named for Chief Shipshewana of the Potawatomi tribe that lived in the area.
Shipsheweana has a strong religious history. The first settlement of Amish came to the area from Pennsylvania in 1844-many demoninations have settled in and around the area.
The population is about 540, with a police department and volunteer fire department. Students attend Shipshewana-Scott Elementary School and Meadowview Elementary while the 5th through 12th grades attend Westview Junior and Senior High School.
Howe, Indiana is located in Lima Township-which is the home to several of the LaGrange County 64 lakes. So whether you are an avid fisherman, a sports enthusiast or just enjoy the peace and tranquility of the water you will enjoy our lakes.
South Twin Lake-has 116 Acres with Sand, Marl and Gravel Bottom.
North Twin Lake-has 135 Acres with Sand, Marl and Gravel Bottom.
Cedar Lake-has 120 Acres with Gravel and Marl Bottom.
Still Lake- has 30 Acres with Marl Bottom.
Pigeon Lake-has 61 Acres with Gravel, Muck and Sand with smaller Buck Lake near by.
Mateer Lake-18 Acres with Marl Bottom and smaller Duff Lake near by.
We also have Pigeon River and Fawn River that flows through Lima Township making a great outdoor experience for everyone. Indiana does have Boating Laws, Personal Water Craft Laws, Fishing Regulations and General License Regulations.
HOWE was the first white settlement in LaGrange County, Indiana in 1834 then known as Mongoquinong because of the Potawatomi Indians who were native to this region. the name was changed to Lima and then to Howe, afer John B Howe, a founder of the community's first bank.
The Howe Military School was founded in 1884-it is a military school with co-educational military private college preparatory boarding school for students in grades 5 through 12. The school is located on SR9 in Howe, Indiana and is affiliated with the Episcopal Church. The St James Chapel (which I have posted a photo) has hand-carved interior and holds recitals and concerts which are open to the public.
Howe also has a United Methodist Church as well as the Lima Presbyterian Church establised in 1833 (photo posed).
The Town Square Park is located in the center of the quaint village of Howe, Indiana and serves a a gathering place for ice cream socials, Farmers Market and various events for the community. Howe has a population of approximately 1,000 with a volunteer fire department and a number of historic buildings and homes.
Elementary studenst attend Lima-Brighton School (Kindergarten through 5th grade) then to Lakeland Junior and High School in LaGrange, Indiana.
